alright, i know that feeling. Make sure you have enough spare pads and check it doesn't leak through you school pants/skirt. Probably not the best idea to use a tampon when you first start your period, i would stick to pads for a while but if youare really keen on the idea go and buy some 'tampax' tampons. or something similar. The tampax ones have a cardboard applicator thingy that helps it slide in really easily. the best thing is to remember is to relax you muscels, and deep breath slowly when you take them in or out otherwise you muscles will be tight and not allow any movement.
i still use the applicator things 2 years on from my first . I've just learnt to insert the normal tampons properly you have you get it really far up you will know when its in the right place if it doesnt hurt/ feel uncomfortable. however i still cant get the normal tampons out without pain.
It took me longer than a week to get used to it, but no one will know about it at school unless you tell them, maby your close friends could give you soome advice?

stay with pads for now, change them every recess, lunch after school and more often if you need. Your flow and regularity of periods might be wacked up for a year or so before you get into the 28 day cycle.
Its nothing to worry about though it can seem daunting at first, talk to your friends, mum, aunty sister or who ever - all females will help you out here they have gone through the same thing.
