can too much exercise really cause delayed puberty? please read?!

Question: Can too much exercise really cause delayed puberty? please read?
I'm turning 15 next week. I'm a girl, I'm about 5'1 (and I've been that height for a long time)..and I weigh 89-90lbs...I HATE being that tiny.. I really want to be in the 100s, but I don't seem to gain weight..

I LOVE health and fitness. it's a hobby of mine.. I like to eat organic and healthy as much as I can..I try to eat all the food groups, I defiantly don't starve myself, I love food. I just hate junk food I NEVER eat it..

I exercise probably around +15hrs a week. I workout in the gym, I run for 40mins 3 days a week. I lift weights, take pilates, take ballet classes..

I never had my period before..I feel like such a freak...all my friends have gotten theirs when they were like 11. and I am really skinny :\ I don't really have much curves or breasts..

Now, when I was 13. I was a little heavier.. I weighed around 100lbs, One day I saw brown spots in my underwear.. that only lasted a month or two.. after that, I lost a lot of weight (due to exercise) and I never saw it again...

Should I be worried about how much I exercise and my healthy diet? I just want to take care of myself.. and I LOVE TO EXERCISE.. I would hate to give it up, but I feel like it might be delaying my growth.. what do you think?

Answers:

Its not necessarily delaying your growth, you're just a small person, and you have to weigh a certain amount before you get your period and puberty occurs. Everyone is different. Don't give up your healthy habits, they're great! You'll develop eventually.

Well a BMI calculator says you are underweight, this isnt healthy and you need to put on weight, really you should be around 100-110 for your height. The skinny girls often do have to wait longer for their breasts and period, but it should come by the time you are 16 (period that is, breasts may never come) if it hasnt come by then, go and see a doctor and discuss it with him

yeah it really does delay your period . i have no idea why, but all my athletic friends are just starting to get theres now at age 15. and my lazy or normal friends got theres around 11-12. so yeah its normal . dont stop what you love. aslong as your a normal weight its fine, maybe you should try and eat some red meat and stuff though to help.

Anything that reduces BMI below a certain level will delay female puberty

Yes, it can.
You need a certain percentage of body fat to get your period, I think 17%. If you exercise a lot and your body doesn't have much fat, then you won't get your period. It's common for gymnasts, for example, not to get their periods or go through puberty until they're a lot older than most girls.
I used to swim when I was younger and I was a twig. I quit when I was 13, and then I started gaining a little weight. I'm still really tiny, but after I stopped swimming I got my period and started filling out a little.
I don't think you should give up exercising and eating healthy. It's good for you. Maybe you could cut back for a while and see if it helps.
