So when i was taking the pill i liked to start a pack on a sunday - that way i avoided having my period on the weekends.
as for when you can "safely" start having sex, about a month after you start. within the first month you should use some kind of back up.

You mean birth control?
You can technically have sex whenever. Just that its recommended that you use a condom.
Birth control only protects you about 90% of the time, so there's a 10% chance you could still get pregnant.
I'd recommend still using a condom, just to be safe.
