I had that same problem. Today was my first time using one and i was terrified. But i just thought of how i had to use one for track and that it would make it easier. I would suggest tampax pearl normal. And make sure its plastic. So much easier than cardboard ones.

What you can do is think of a scenario where you will need to put a tampon in. Such as running when having your period or going down rapids in canoe. That may help you to think of the fact that you may need it in the future. Most people say that it hurts at first but the fact is anything hurts at first. Like when you strum a guitar for a bit, it will hurt your fingers at first but then they get used to it. So what i'm saying is that the more you put in the tampon the more you will get used to it. So don't be scared and give it a try. If it hurts then stop for a bit pull it out. You could then insert a q-tip. Once you get used to that then try two or three. Till you get enough in there to make you feel comfortable and feel like you can finally put the tampon in. If you are able to put seven to nine q-tips in then you will surely be able to put a tampon in.

HERE ARE SOME FACTS THAT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER!!!!!
1. 81% of women wear tampons, they are obviously safe! It's not a big deal :)
2. You don't have to shove the tampon up there! Gently slide it in, and you are fine!
3. If you are not ready, just stick with pads!
4. As long as you can see the string hanging out, you are just fine! Trust me!
5. I recently overcame this fear, and now I wear them when it's that time of the month, no sweat! :)

Good luck sweetie!~
I hope I helped you~!
