How long will it take for my period to return?!

Question: How long will it take for my period to return?
My last B/C pill I took was January 6th, the week of Christmas was the last time I saw my period. Three days after stopping the pill i had REALLY bad cramps and not really spotting but not my normal period, but lighter than normal. Once that was done (about 5 days and it kept getting lighter and lighter) I havn't seen it since. We took a pregnancy test Sunday night and it was negative and friday we are going to retake it just to be sure. I was on the pill for 12 years because when I started I literally didn't stop and didn't have a break in days at all. We are just starting to use NFP and I am worrried that this is messing me up some how. If anyone has had a similar problem please let me know what happened. Not really complaining, but since its a normal thing kinda worried it hasn't showed up yet ya know?

With 12 years of being on artificial birth control, it's probably going to take you some time to get back to normal. For most women, it's normal to take 2-6 months to get their periods back. I don't know how old you are, but if you started taking birth control pills at a young age, then you may not have known about some hormone issues that would have been present had you not been on the pill. Many women discover hormone imbalances in their mid 20s... if you have been on the artificial cycles of the pill for all these years, then it may have been masking some imbalances. So if you go a few months and things are still not back to normal, you may need to start talking to your doctor. For example, many women find that after getting off the pill their cycles are really irregular or they aren't ovulating at all. Being on the pill hides those problems. But be patient for now, try to take really good care of yourself (diet, exercise, etc). If you are starting NFP, keep in mind that the residual hormones will interfere with your charting for probably another month or so and then you should be able to start trusting all that you are seeing. I know it's tough to get off the pill but you will get over this!
