Tailbone in a lot of pain?!

Question: Tailbone in a lot of pain?
Hi, so for the past week and a half I have had unbearable pain on my tail bone (I am assuming it is my tailbone)
When ever I bed over only when I am sitting, and also if I sit the wrong way. Such as when I sit on the toilet seat (not using the toilet you know when you put the seat down and sit on top of it) It is really sore. I have never, ever had this problem before. I do not play sports or even do much physical work. I actually basically sit all day. My job is a book keeper. Which I have been doing for 4 years, could this have anything to do with it? I have no injured it in any other way. I am a 21 year old female. I am over weight, have been most of my life. I spoke to my doctor about it and he said it was nothing that I needed to lose weight. but thats what his answer is to everything
Anyway, I am just looking for help as to why this is happening, can someone please elaborate on this for me,
thanks

Answers:

Coccyx (tailbone) pain is called coccydynia. There are various causes, often through injury/trauma or as a result of giving birth. However, it can also be caused by sitting for long stretches on a hard surface. Very rarely it is caused by tumours. Oftentimes the cause is not known.

It sounds like you may have developed this by prolonged sitting, though it is also possible that you have dislocated your coccyx. It's not something you should ignore, as it can develop into a chronic condition.

You need to find a more sympathetic doctor. He may want to run some tests to identify potential causes (eg Xray or MRI scan) as well as conduct a thorough exam. They are various treatments, ranging from anti-inflammatory tablets or steroidal injections right up to (in severe cases) surgery.

In the meantime, try to avoid putting any pressure on your coccyx - you can buy a special cushion for the purpose. I am sure you will be able to find it on the web.
