Should I see a doctor about the abnormal amount of hair that is falling out?!

Question: Should I see a doctor about the abnormal amount of hair that is falling out?
I'm a 19 year old female student who is under a lot of stress lately due to uni work, money troubles and the fact that I just got out of a 3 year r.ship with my bf, so it hasn't been a good year so far(!)
I'm concerned with the amount of hair that is coming out when I wash it and brush it and it's starting to really freak me out :(
A little background info: I'm on a progesterone only contraceptive pill, I've been under a lot of stress lately (see above) and I have my hair permanently dyed every few weeks at the hair dressers. However, I'd say that I am of average height and weight and tend to eat relatively well.
So should I see a doctor?
Please help!!

Answers:

Hair loss can have many causes. Stress, as you say, is one. Stress can also cause a deficiency in the B vitamins, especially B12, and this can cause hair loss. An underactive thyroid can also cause hair to fall out. Also, every 5 years or so, people go through a major molting stage.

You could go see a doctor, and he/she may do some blood tests, but there probably isn't a lot that can be done unless it's a hormonal deficiency such as thyroid problems. However, you sound like you are in good physical health, and the absence of any other symptoms make it unlikely it's thyroid related.

Try finding some ways to deal with your stress (easier said than done, I acknowledge that!). Maybe try a vitamin B complex, which is beneficial in times of increased stress.

Yes. It could be the stress, but it could also have to do with your thyroid or your birth control.
