Do you need a Pap smear to get BC?!

Question: Do you need a Pap smear to get BC?
Okay so i'm a virgin and I am 14 years old. I asked my mom about BC because I have irregular periods. And she said yes. But she told me I would need the GYN to stick stuff in my vagina and examine it.... Please tell me this isn't true because I would not be able to have this done to me I would literally cry. Do you have to have anything done in order to have BC? Any test?

You do not need a pap smear for birth control pills. You need a pap smear if you are sexually active, which is the main reason why people get b/c pills. But in your case, it should not be necessary.

I hope this helps. Good luck, honey.

If you start BC they might want to do a PAP to make sure everything is normal according to what BC your on. I have them and its really not that bad. Just ask for a woman doctor. All the do is stick a long Q-Tip in and take test from that. They might feel to see if you have an abnormalities. Its not completely terrible and its only once a year. Dont be scared.

My niece had the irregular periods and when she did she could have used a transfusion. She had to get an exam with the Specula. She said it was better than the periods. It's not that bad. My niece was 14 at the time and she is a devout christian, so a virgin. Don't worry about the exam.

no i never had a pap smear before i went on the pill. because you only have to start having them once you're 18 or sexually active. or at least thats how it is in australia. you never have to do anything you dont want to hun!

i never had to have one, i was 15 and went in to see doc and said that i wanted to go on them and then he just explained a few things to me and that was it :)

No, they are not recommended until age 21 in most women. They will check your height, weight, and blood pressure and probably do a general exam.

Nope, not true. At least not in Minnesota. When i started my birth control pills she told me i need one once i become sexually active, or when i turn 18. whichever comes first

Yes, you must get examined in order to get BC.

Good news is that no, you won't get a pap smear test. Pap smears are only for the sexually active or those over the age of 18 years. This is because unless you are sexually active, you would not have been likely to come into contact with the strains of HPV that cause cervical cancer(this is what a pap smear tests for, it detects abnormal cervical cells that could possibly turn into cancer).

Bad news is that yes, you may have to get a pelvic exam(depending on how thorough the doctor wants to be), where the doctor inserts her fingers of one hand into your vagina and feels around the lower part of your tummy from the outside with her other hand to check for abnormalities on your ovaries and inside of your vagina. She will also have a look at the outside of your vagina for anything abnormal like sores, swelling, unusual colouring, ect.

She may also take cultures/swabs from your vagina to check for any bacterial infections, yeast infections, and to just generally check that your vagina has a healthy level of ''good'' bacteria. She may also do a breast examination, as during puberty, many changes happen within breast tissue that you yourself may not pick up on. This also prepares you for other check ups later on and teaches you how to check your breasts yourself.

This isn't directly linked with BC, it's also just to get you into a routine, because you are a female, unfortunatly these things become a regular part of life, so getting them done earlier will help you bond with your doctor and make future check ups.

Look at it this way. At least if the doctor picks up on anything now, like a yeast infection, which happens to everybody and is not permanent or life threatening, you can get it cleared up faster. And if you do go to the doctor, and she just gives you a prescription, you can come back here a verbally kick my a.s.s for getting you all worked up for nothing!!! I would just rather have you prepared, and not lie to you, then lie to you and you be completely unprepared, terrified, embarrased and humiliated. At least now you know what could happen.

What will certainly happen is you will have your heart rate and blood pressure taken, both of which are simple, non-invasive, and done with your clothes on!!!

Take your ipod along with you, and look up some relaxation techniques to help you through it. Make sure you get a female doctor. And know that each and every woman here sympathises with you, because we have all been through it before. Imagine we are all there, holding your hand.

Best of luck, sweetie, I hope this doesn't scare you even more. Honestly, as uncomfortable as they are, they only last all of 5 minutes, and then you're outta there! Organise something nice to do afterwards, to help you forget it quick.

I'm a 21 year old female who has had 3 pap smears in her entire sexually active life. I have been on 3 different types of birth control, but I have changed with each pap smear. I now have Implanon!
