No. The mirena has hormones like the oral bc does. So it prevents you from ovulating. The copper one kills both the egg and the sperm. Sometimes both can have a hiccup so to speak and you get pregnant but it's not exactly common.

The Mirena is a plastic IUD. It releases a very low dose of hormones. It also prevents pregnancy by blocking the some of the opening on the the cervix as well as not allowing your eggs to attach to the wall of your uterus (this is because of the T shape). So it's got a combo of three different ways to prevent pregnancy.

I've had a Mirena for a year and both researched it and quizzed a friend who has one before I got it.
