Doctors or Patients: Do abortions hurt?!

Question: Doctors or Patients: Do abortions hurt?
Is there supposed to be any pain? If so, is it mild or severe? How long does it take to heal? Thanks.

Answers:

Didn't hurt me. I had a D&C and they knocked me out to sleep. 20 minutes later I woke up in the recovery room. Afterwards I just had a couple cramps, just like a period.
It takes about 4 weeks for your body to heal after an abortion...or a miscarriage...or birth.

So physically, no it didn't hurt. But there's different types of abortions, and the later into the pregnancy the abortion is done, the more complicated it is.

Had an abortion.

I have had abortions before the pill and surgical and to me the pill method has the most pain involved because it basically just gives you a miscarriage and you real bad cramps. Surgical abortion didn't really hurt at all there was a little discomfort but no pain and i been awake durnging them but they can put you under if you want. Afterward there is a little soreness but that's about it

For most women, medical abortion (when a woman takes a pill rather than surgery and goes home to have the abortion) feels like a bad menstrual period with strong cramps, diarrhea and upset stomach. These symptoms are normal. Acetaminophen (one brand name: Tylenol) or ibuprofen (two brand names: Advil, Motrin) can help relieve the cramps. However, the doctor will want to know if any of the following occur:

* Bleeding through more than 2 sanitary pads in an hour
* Fever above 100°F for more than 4 hours
* Pain even after taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen

For most women, surgical abortion (when you go in, lay down, and have the surgical procedure) feels like strong menstrual cramps. Women are usually given medicine to help with the pain and told to rest when they get home. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen can also help. Bleeding may continue off and on for a few weeks.

Generally, it takes about 2 weeks for a woman to start to feel normal after either kind of abortion. For the first 2 weeks the woman should not lift anything over 15 pounds or insert anything into the vagina (or have sex).

From what I've heard from people who have gotten them, yes. The first answer was much more detailed but I don't know from personal experience because I've never been pregnant, nor do I think I would abort if I was (adoption always seemed to be the better choice). But from people I've talked to it sounded a little more painful than the first answer described, but they also seem to know what they're talking about.
