Advice on irregular periods for someone in their 40's please?!

Question: Advice on irregular periods for someone in their 40's please?
In Dec I got my period on the 1st of the month, also on the 29th of the month, 28 days apart, no big deal, but In Jan I got it on the 24th of the month, 3 days sooner then expected, I guess that's normal, it's only the 17th of Feb & I'm spotting which means it will be here any day now, so it's only been 22 days, is this normal? I am 45 yrs old & my periods have been regular up until now. Am I starting to go through perimenopause? Will my periods go back to normal? I don't have health insurance so it's not like I can run to the doctors. It's not all that big of a deal, but it seems like every time I turn around I'm on my period, & to get it twice in one month, come on now.

I think perimenopause can last a while and you're the right age so I don't think you really need to see a doctor about it. I'm 44 and my cycle has been funny for a year or so and my doc isn't worried about it and hasn't even tested me for the perimenopause. It's not that big a deal.

You could well be approaching menopause. I read the average age for menopause is 51 which means many women arrive at this point in their lives sooner and many arrive later. Peri-menopausal symptoms can occur up to 6-8 years prior to the actual menopause itself, defined as 1 year and 1 day since your last period, after this you are post-menopausal - oh what joys we have to look forward to.

I'm 44 and I have Mirena IUS so I don't get periods (I have it to control excessively heavy bleeding) but I think when it runs out in 18 months I will have it removed and see how my periods are now. Some women get fewer periods some get more irregular ones.

Sounds like you are in the second group I'm afraid and without seeing a doctor I doubt there is much you can do other than eat plenty of Soya and maybe see if there are herbal supplements which might help? I heard Soya helps peri-menopausal women "sail" through the menopause. I expect if you did get bloods done the results would show you are peri-menopausal.

Best of luck.
