My daughter wants to go on the Depo Provera shot need opinions!?!

Question: My daughter wants to go on the Depo Provera shot need opinions!?
I have a seventeen year old daughter, she wants to go on the birth control shot depo provera. She tells me the reason she wants to go on it is the common side effect of weight gain. I told her if she gained five pounds on her own she could go on the shot, she has gained six and has brought it up once again (she has a small frame and has difficulty gaining weight). I should note that she has a boyfriend in her grade who she has been dating for about five months....help need advice asap!

I'm 18 years old in college and have a long-term boyfriend. A couple of months after I turned 18, I got the depo shot because a good friend of mine recommended it for birth control. Since being on the shot, I have lost a TON of hair, actually have lost a few pounds, and for the past month or so, I've been getting really intense migraines almost every day. I've always been a little on the pessimistic side, but lately I have been feeling extremely depressed.

I think that if your daughter wants to gain weight, she should find a healthier alternative. There are way too many dangerous side effects that the depo shot can cause. And since she (and I) are so young, I'm assuming neither of us have stable enough hormones to handle the shot.

I think that you should let her know that birth control is still an option for her if she wants it. I understand that a lot of parents don't want to condone premarital sex, but if your kids are going to be having sex, wouldn't you prefer they didn't get pregnant from it?

I'm switching to the pill and maybe you could look into that, too. It doesn't cause bone loss, infertility, or blood clots, but I'm sure there are some negatives there, too. Good luck!

Bad experiences =/

Well, to be honest, I don't believe it's for weight gain. She will probably have sex. I know you are probably not interested in her becoming sexually active, but hey... she is thinking about protection. Teenagers are going to have sex with or without birth control, so not letting her do it won't stop her from having sex, it will just make it less likely that protection will be involved. If I were you, I would go along with the weight gain story and let her do it, and I would find a time to casually bring up condoms and other sex advice. Just don't make it sound accusing. Too many parents hope to stop their teens from having sex by denying them birth control, but from my experience, teens that are denied birth control simply get pregnant. Also, she's already asked you for birth control (even though it's just for "weight gain") so if you are open about her possible decisions regarding sex, she may be more likely to discuss those things with you. As soon as I got a serious boyfriend that I was spending time alone with, my mother offered to put me on birth control. I declined, but it let me know I could discuss those things with her if I wanted to talk about it.

Try other methods of B.C. first. Use Depo as a last alternative. I was on it for years it caused hair loss and bone loss. Do you also know that this drug has been given to sex offenders to kill their sex drive? So image what it will do for your daughter unless you don't mind that aspect of the drug. For the first 2 months of taking this drug I had break through bleeding almost daily. Until eventually after taking it for a year my periods stopped all together. After being on the drug for awhile it takes quite a bit of time to ovulate again when you discontinue it. I would not suggest taking this for anyone of childbearing age. I had already had three children when I started taking this. For me this drug threw me into a pseudo-menopause state. Don't do it!

If she's asking, help her get it.
