What happens when you go to get birth control?!

Question: What happens when you go to get birth control?
I'm 14 years old (birthday is march 27th) and my mom wants to take me to get birth control on march 9th. I really don't want to go but she said "i'd feel more comfortable if you got it" so there it is.

But I'm a little worried/scared. What does the doctor do before they give you birth control? What do they touch? What do they check? Do they put anything in me?

Thanks. D:

I hear this sort of story a few times a year. A good GP will not prescribe the pill to a 14 year old unless it is the lesser of 2 evils, ie she is already sexually active and it is needed to avoid pregnancy.

To use it on a just in case basis on the instruction of your mother is entirely inappropriate. Suppose you take the pill, which you don't currently need, and are unlucky enough to be one of the 12/100,000 females taking the pill who develops a leg clot, which fires off into the lungs as a pulmonary embolism, and you die, how will your mum then justify the fact that you took it and how will the doctor justify your death?

Cervical/pap smears are not performed until age 25 in England and Wales and 20 in Scotland.

GP for more years than I care to remember

I think your mom needs to get a clue but that's my opinion. You are too young in body to take the pill and good luck finding a doctor who will let you have it, but I am sure they are out there. You need to take that pill at the same time every single day. That means if you take it at 8 a.m. during the week, on the weekends you gotta set your alarm to take it at 8 a.m.
You are too young to be sexually active. You need to be a kid right now. Not someone growing up so fast.
And yes, the doctor will put something in you called a speculum to open your vagina so he can look in there, and since you have been active he will take a swab and maybe even a blood test to make sure you don't have an STD.

i just got on it about 3 months ago. and really, you dont have to get a pap smear until you are 21. so really all your doctor will do is ask you questions; why you want to get on it, are you sexually active, do you smoke/drink, etc.. stuff like that. you will be fine :)

Honestly, it depends. If you are not sexually active, he probably won't check anything. However, if you are sexually active (and be honest!) he will probably perform a gyn exam. Most doctors are very understanding about your first gyn appointment...so don;t worry :-)

My first trip to the gynecologist was specifically for birth control, and I wasn't that much older than you. I was also sexually active, and my mom also wanted make sure I was being safe. Yikes. They will ask you questions about your family medical history, check your height, weight, and blood pressure like any other doctor's office would. They will ask you why you're there, or if you have any other concerns. Your insurance usually won't pay for birth control pills unless they are medically required (painful cramps, heavy bleeding), so your mother's peace of mind probably won't come cheap. =D

So, then the nurse will leave you in the room, you will get undressed and put on a paper gown with a slit in it. She will specify whether the gown should be open in the front or the back. Since it is your first trip, your doctor may do a breast exam. This was way embarrassing and I had no warning that this might happen, but I was lucky enough to have a female doctor. But it really isn't a big deal - pretty much like a self-breast exam but with another person checking. No tools or machines or anything. XD

The doctor will then proceed to do a pelvic exam. You will lay on your back, spread eagle but with a paper cloth draped over your legs. The doctor will have a metal instrument called the speculum. She will put lube on it, and warm it up with her (gloved) hands so it doesn't freeze the crap out of you. She will put the speculum into your vagina and she will use it open the walls of your vagina so she can see your cervix. Try to relax. She will then do a pap smear. It is a test to see if you have cancerous cells, and this should be done annually. Maybe less since you're so young, but since you're sexually active, they might insist they check this time. She will scrape off a small tissue sample. This hurt me just a little bit. Once I bled afterwards, but nothing serious.

She will leave, you will get dressed, and she will come back in to talk to you about the pills, your exam, etc. This would be a good time to ask questions. For example: "what's a pap smear?" It never hurts to educate yourself about your own body. You'll leave and get your prescription - don't forget that the pills take time to build up in your system so use a condom for a least one cycle. Hmm, I think that's it. When you make the appointment, they will tell you what you can do to prepare for your exam and what else to expect. Sorry for the excessive detail, but you seemed really scared. =)

I hope this helped. It'll be okay, I promise!!! Ah, the joys of being a woman.
