besides not enough excercise and too many calories could have caused it.

If you really don't feel like your habits have changed that much then maybe ask your GP to look into it. You could have a thyroid problem.
Hi - it is primarily caused by lack of exercise and too many calories, of course.
However, women (and men) do suffer a change in body shape in mid life. 'Middle aged spread'.
20lbs is not going to be too hard to shift, through healthy eating and simply walking daily.
