I know this isn't want you want to hear, but the best way is just to ask your ma. you can use the swimming excuse and then tell your ma that you like them better, my ma uses tampons so she had no problem with me using them, but that's not your situation. as for the type, i use tampax compact because i like them because they have a plastic applicator and i like the fact that they are smaller when they're in the packaging, that's just me though, you may have to try a few brands before you find the one you like best. You really do need to tell your mom. Tell her you want to be able to swim and be comfortable in sports, but be sure to tell her that you will be careful to change them often enough, and to use pads over night or at home. Go with her to the store and tell her you want to buy some tampons, and tell her a specific brand and tell her why you want those so she thinks you did some research.
I would recommend Tampax Pearl tampons because they have a rounded tip and makes it a lot easier to insert. Use the lite ones first to get used to it. Remember to read the directions on the box very carefully and understand EXACTLY what you have to do. Wash your hands before changing a tampon so you don't get any germs in there and use the right absorbancy. You should also wear a pantyliner to catch any extra blood.

Well, if u r a junior in high school you would have your license right??? So just drive yourself down to the store and pick up a box of tampons. If you're worried about what size to get, just start with regular and go uP or down from there if you need to. There are directions on the box to help you get it in but it wont be easy the first couple of times. It takes time to get the hang of it. As for your mom, keep he box of them hidden under your bed so she doesn't notice.

Well, my advice is get beginner/light flow sized tampons, by Tampax are good because they have a long shiny & smooth cardboard applicator you just slip inside (moisten your opening a little) and push up. The string sits outside for you to pull it out again a few hours later. It may feel weird or uncomfortable at first but you'll adapt to it.
Maybe your school nurse can talk to you about them? It's a shame your mom won't communicate with you about these things; I see it as part of her duty. Still; you could explain to her they are the most hygienic and convenient form of sanitary protection. They only come in a small box though, so conceal them if you have to and get some panty liners too if she's suspicious. Openness would be best though.
