Procedure to end periods?!

Question: Procedure to end periods?
I was wondering if there was a procedure that can be done to end periods (along with the cramping, nausea and bloating). I am not looking for induced menopause (my body doesn't react well on hormones), and I would like to stay clear of a hysterectomy if possible. All I want is for my periods to stop permanently, which tube-tying wont prevent. I have a history of periods that are irregular, painful cramps and intense nausea. My last ob gyn would only give me pain meds, which only work after the third day of my periods. I have tried birth control pills, but they gave me morning sickness everyday and I didn't like having to take a pill every day at the same time.

I have asked my last ob gyn about a hysterectomy before, but she said I was too young with too healthy of a uterus to be considered for the procedure, saying that I might change my mind and want to have kids when I get older (I am 22). She said that even after I explained that the only way I want to have a child is through adoption, especially since I was adopted and I want to support the adoption of older kids. I am also gay, so there is no way for me to get knocked up anyway (I don't consider sperm banks as an option). I feel like I'm going through a lot of grief over a natural process that I never want to actually use, so is a hysterectomy my only answer?

I would agree with the suggestion that you try a Mirena IUD. It may stop your period, or at least make it lighter. It is hormonal, that's true, but it's far less hormone than those in the pill. It contains only one hormone, an artificial progesterone, while most pills contain an artificial progesterone and an estrogen. Furthermore, almost all of the hormone stays in the uterus and does not go to other parts of the body, so you won't have the same side effects you were having before.

Typically they say that only if you have had children should you have an IUD. But this is not really true. The main problem is that unless you've forced an entire baby through your cervix, then the opening in your cervix is pretty small and a challenge to fit an IUD through. Because of this, your doc can give you a misoprostol pill the night before the procedure in order to dilate your cervix.

However: have you ever ben checked to see if you have endometriosis? That might explain the pain you have been having.

Also, a hysterectomy does come with some potential problems. And sometimes hysterectomy causes the ovaries to stop working.

For some poeple the mirena IUD gets rid of periods. But thats hormonal.

So yeah a hysterectomy is the only option- and even that I believe messes with your bodies hormone cycle.

Talk to your ob-gyn about Mirena. It is a progestrone-only IUD that either makes your periods extremely light or sometimes go away. I have had it for only a few days now, but I already like it (although I have been a bit moody lately, but that will go away). It's great because you don't have to worry about taking pills or regretting your decision to have a hysterectomy when you decide you want kids. Mirena can be left in for up to 5 years, but at the end of the 5 years you can have another one placed. I used to have really bad periods too (A month and a half at a time, changing pads every hour on the hour, with two weeks in between each other). I have tried several other pills and nothing worked for me. If you want to try pills again you can try Seasonique, which is a pill but you only get your period once every three months. It worked wonders for me but my doctor took me off of it for other medical reasons. You might have gotten morning sickness from the pills because you took them on an empty stomach (that happened to me all the time). So if you decide to try pills again just make sure you have a little something to eat before hand.

the only thing that i know of that may help reduce alot of the symptoms is an iud (mirena coil) my doctor suggested it to me after having my kids as i have very heavy painful periods she told me that after a few months it could stop my periods all together and get rid of the cramps and bloating or you could go on the pill injection but that can make you quite hormonal.whereas the coil you wont get as high as dose of hormones. hope this helps.

and good luck with your adoption plans i hope they go well.
