Pcos..........period problem!!!!?!

Question: Pcos..........period problem!!!!?
I'm 15 and have been diagnosed with pcos!! I haven't had my period now for about 4 months and am worried!!
I go to the gym and am a healthy size 10 (38)so I'm not fat!!
I want my period to come naturally without any pills!! Can anyone suggest how it can come back because I am really scared and worried!!

Hi Maggi

Firstly, there is no need to get scared just because your periods aren't coming. The role of periods is to flush away the lining of the womb, but if you have PCOS, it is quite likely you are not forming a womb lining (because of low progesterone) and so there is nothing to flush away.No big deal....

But then, of course you want to get your body back to normal. There is a proven dietary approach to controlling PCOS, through controlling insulin levels (the root cause of PCOS). It is as follows.

(1) Follow a low glycemic index diet, that is, avoid foods that produce a rapid rise in blood sugar levels. Only eat carbs that have a low GI (glycemic index).

(2) Eat foods rich in d chiro inositol (DCI). This natural compound reduces insulin levels. You should aim to consume 600mg per day. Chick peas are my reco, cos they are high in DCI and have a low GI.

If you do both of these, your ovarian function and hormone levels should return to normal after 8 to 12 weeks. And your periods of course.

Hope that helps.

Unfortunately, having PCOS is beyond your control. Which means that having your period come naturally is beyond your control, as well. Had you been overweight, I'd have said that weight loss would be a good way to make your system be more regular. But you are already of a normal, healthy weight. So that won't work. Sometimes they put women with PCOS on Metformin, which can regularize their cycles. Has that been suggested to you? Another possibility is some of the alternative medicine techniques, in which they suggest that dietary changes may help. For example, since your PCOS problem has as a central component insulin insensitivity, you may want to see about eating like a diabetic. That means eating a low glycemic index diet. So like, check out this book: http://www.amazon.com/Glycemic-Index-Die…

See if that will help. It will help to regularize your insulin levels.

If these things don't help, then just keep in mind that this is largely beyond your control, and that while you are seeking to control it in any way you can, it's just mostly out of your hands.

I have pcos hun and when i took my first period at 13 i only ever took it once a year til i was sbout 22, then i lost some weight and started taking them every month again. Try not too worry tho, this is just another pain in the *** symptom of pcos :(
