the best way is not to think about it
take Mydol

the only reason that you do you is because you think you will if you are on your period

Get a menstrual cup.
They're internal so not even a string shows outside your body and more comfortable, they can be worn with any flow, can be worn for 12 hours, they can lessen cramps, and don't leak like tampons/pads do so a lot more convenient and comfortable when active. Get period panties.
Either padded underwear like Lunapanties http://lunapads.com/underwear.html or leak-proof panties like Sexy Period http://sexyperiod.com so that if you use tampons or pads there's less worry about leaking, plus wearing nice underwear rather than ugly old period panties make you feel better.

Read Optimized Woman.
Or go to a workshop http://www.optimizedwoman.com it explains how at certain points in your cycle you are better at certain things like being able to think more clearly, so you can use your cycles better, like you might be lacking in motivation during menstruation but be better at strategies.

Prevent cramps.
Anything negative about your period like cramps, moodiness, lethargy, bloating, etc. can all be avoided, it's just a matter of figuring out what works for you. Dietary changes is the best way of helping, even little changes to your diet or taking vitamins leading up to your period will help, also taking something like evening primrose oil to balance hormones will help too. For cramps there's a few ideas on my answer here -

Generally improve your attitude.
Women are constantly bombarded with negative messages about menstruation and rarely hear about the positives of menstruation. This effects how you feel about menstruation and how you experience menstruation - research shows if you have a positive attitude towards periods not only are you more likely to learn more thus be able to deal better with menstruation, but that menstrual problems are lessened if you appreciate your period more.

always use playtex sports tampons while working out or doing sports. They stay in place and absorb a lot of blood. also, take mydol max, it has a little caffeine (more like a lot lol) and doesnt make you gittery.

Use Playtex Sports, The Chicks In The Commercials Are Always Playing Tennis, Soccer Or Even Horseback Riding.....WOW!!!
