WHY do women smell down there during Period?!

Question: WHY do women smell down there during Period?
I have had this happen to me with my last girlfriend. Everytime she had her period it would smell in the room. Now my new girlfriend has the same problem, I have never mentioned it to her cause I dont want to hurt her feelings. I usually tell her that she smells great...

But WHY do women smell down there, cause isn't it just blood?
I sometimes injure myself, but my blood never smells.

Thanks to all (I hope bothe of them dont have some kind of disease, please do clearify if that could be a possibility)

you gonna be a real hit with the yahoo ladies with these questions.

I am going to presume that you are being genuine and not just trying to be silly. Therefore I will explain this phenomenom to you.

Period blood has hardly any actual blood in it. It actually consists of the lining of the womb, which thickens and then sheds. This happens once a month and on the journey out of the body the shed womb lining picks up some blood cells along the way. These blood cells are what give menstraution fluid it's blood-like colour. Only about 1 tablespoon of actual blood is lost during the whole cycle - so it shows how little blood is actually in this fluid. When the period blood comes into contact with air, it reacts to the bacteria in the air and causes it to smell. The smell is bacteria. Fresh period blood that has not come into contact with bacteria has no smell .

I am a lady who has "special" experience with these things :P

During her period a woman is not fertile, so the smell also drives away potential mates. Women's bits also often smell bad after sex. Same thing; the smell will drive away other men.

It's completely and absolutely normal, and nothing can be done about it.

My guess would be a hygiene issue. If you use pads and don't change them often enough you will get an odor. Also in some cultures bathing during your cycle is discouraged, although I don't know why. I have to bathe more often at that time.
