Don't worry about Tampons until you're there, girl!

Just for the info, tho, I started Tampons the day after my 1st period and It is WAY better than pads!!

Everyone's preferences are different. Some women like tampons because they don't feel like a saggy diaper. But this all depends on you and your flow.It is suggested you wait at least 6months to a year before beginning the use of tampons. But this is so you are used to your flow . Because you won't know how heavy your flow is or when to change it . Where as pads you can feel and see when to change it without removing it.This option will be entirely up to you and which you prefer.

You haven't started your period yet, so don't worry about it till it comes. And you should probably start with pads your first period at least.Just make sure to have a few pads in your backpack just in case. And just so you know , girls start there period at all different ages. The typical age is right around 11-14, but you can start anywhere from 8-16. It really all depends on your body and development.

BTW: never put in a tampon if you haven't started your period yet , or if you aren't on it at the present time. And when/if you end up using tampons don't leave them in for over 8 hours. But you should change it at least every 6 hours to keep from a infection.

If your hymen is still intact, you can't use a tampon unless you break your hymen (sorry for the bad news).

Many people prefer tampons because it doesn't make you feel like you're wearing a diaper and since you're not literally wearing a mini-diaper it doesn't make you smell down there as much. Also, you can do more things and have more freedom whereas with pads sometimes it goes out of position, or it feels icky etc.

Try pads and if you like them just the way they are, then stay with pads. If you find them irritating or uncomfortable, try tampons. But you haven't even had your period yet so don't worry about something like that yet!

I wasn't going to answer because people have already answered you question but a few things need clearing up.

Wearing a tampon has NOTHING to do with whether your hymen has been broken. You can wear a tampon as soon as you have started your periods, feel comfortable to try and have some idea of how heavy your flow is. You don't want to be using a heavy flow tampon if you are light.

It is totally your preference what you use. I prefer to use a tampon because I think it is more hygienic and more comfortable. You can forget about your period for 6 hours at a time and not worry whether or not your pad has moved or if there is blood going everywhere (sorry for tmi).

You do not need to worry when you start your period. Some girls don't start until 17/18. If you do not start when your friends have, it is not something to pray for - when you get your period you will wish you didn't have to worry about it! there is no right or wrong age so just let it happen on it's own.

When you are trying to wear a tampon for the first time, have a wash, make yourself nice and clean down there. Lay on the floor (lock the bathroom door!), lay in the position as if you was giving birth, some people find it easier to put a pillow under their bum or a folded towel to raise you a bit, and just try and put it in. Relax. You will know if it is in right or wrong. If it is right - you will barely feel it once it is in. If it is wrong - it will still be between your muscles and will feel uncomfortable. Use a tampon with a plastic applicator, it will just slide in easier.

Good luck

When you start, use whatever you feel comfortable with. I personally prefer tampons. Once they are in you cannot feel them and when you are menstruating they go in easily. But if you don't want to use them then you don't have to - it's a personal choice.

One thing to bear in mind (and I say this because I wasn't told until aged 15 two years after starting my periods) you MUST change them every 8 hours if you use tampons otherwise you can get Toxic Shock Syndrome.
