how effective are birth control pills?!

Question: How effective are birth control pills?
I'm a new user of BC and have finished 2 packs. I start my new pack today. Im taking Aviane, first pill starting Sunday. I just got off my period. If I start my new pack today and have sex tomorrow, how effective is it? And how many minutes or hours does it take for the pill to start working for that day?

Answers:

If you've finished two packs and are taking your birth control correctly (at the same time every day and not skipping), the effectiveness of the pill won't be affected by where you are in your menstrual cycle or what time of day you have sex. The bleeding you experience every month is triggered by the change in hormones due to taking the week's worth of inactive pills in your pack; you aren't actually ovulating and therefore cannot get pregnant.
When taken correctly, oral contraception including Aviane is between 92 and 99.7% effective.

The birth control should be effective now, since this new pack will be your 3rd pack. As long as you are taking your pills every day at the same time the hormones will stay in your body and be effective.
