will washing myself before and after sex prevent UTI's?!

Question: Will washing myself before and after sex prevent UTI's?
i know that you can get a UTI from sex, especially without a condom, and since im on birth control, my boyfriend and i dont use them anymore.

however, i always freshen myself up before sex, and i wash up right after.
sometimes its just with one of those feminine cleansing cloths, but most of the time i just use summer's eve feminine wash.

i heard that washing before and after sex gets rid of the bacteria that causes UTI's...is this true? and what are other ways to prevent them?

Answers:

This is true to an extent. You may get rid of the bacteria on the outside of the body but if bacteria is on the inside of the body, urinating after sex is your best prevention tool. This will flush some of the bacteria out. It also helps as a general hygiene tip to drink lots of water, drink cranberry juice (helps keep the bacteria fro sticking to the walls of the urinary tract), and to always use the bathroom when you need to (never hold it in).

Peeing after intercourse definitely helps. It flushes out some of the foreign bacteria in the urethra that you collected from your partner. I'm sure that washing before and after sex helps more than not, just for the sake of hygiene, and I can't see a problem with it. However, I've never heard that, but if it works for you, all the more power to ya.

You can prevent it by drinking cranberry juice. This raises the acidity of the urine and allows for an environment that is not very friendly to those nasty UTI microbes. It will not cure an infection though. For it to go away, you should go to the doctor, who will most likely prescribe a medication class of fluoroquinolones, which are specifically for UTIs. I had Bactrim, and it worked like a charm.

It will help, but peeing helps more.
