Copper IUD? Is this the right choice?!
Question: Copper IUD? Is this the right choice?
I'm going to my gyno on Wednesday. Mainly for my yearly (although it's my first), but I want birth control. I don't want to take hormones, because of the side effects, plus I have medical conditions that would complicate my situation.
So, through research I thought that a copper IUD is the best choice for me because it is hormone free. However, I don't understand the side effects. I don't know how this device can make your periods heavier and cramps worse, if there is no hormone involved. That is the only thing that is bugging me because I already have a period that lasts about a week (but I am not a heavy bleeder), and my cramps already are pretty bad.
I want to hear from anyone who has used a Copper IUD.
Also, will my boyfriend by able to feel it when we have sex?
I still think this is probably my best option, unless I just stick to using condoms, but I really want to prevent pregnancy, because that is my biggest concern.
Plus I heard that most gyno's (female anyways) use IUD's as their birth control and that it is underrated. What do you all think?

I got my iud 2 years ago. I'm not sure if its copper, its called mirena. Its definitely the best decision for birth control. I havent gotten my period in 2 years! And I've never had anyone tell me they can feel it with their penis. Its just tiny little strings. I can feel it sometimes with my fingers but only if I go really deep. My obgyn reccomended it and yes she said it is her choice of birth control.
