If taken correctly, is birth control effective immedeiately?!

Question: If taken correctly, is birth control effective immedeiately?
I'm taking birth control and I started the first pill literally the day my period started and I take it at the same time every day. I read all the directions for my birth control and the directions said if you take the first day of your period, it will be effective immediatley. But my roommate says that even if the directions say it is okay, you still have to wait a month for to actually work. My logic is that if that were true the birth control packaging would tell me (I mean its not like the birth control pill companies are out to get me, why would they lie about that?) So my question is, is if everything is done correctly, will my birth control be effective immediately? and even if its not effective immediately, should I wait a whole MONTH. Or just like a week to be on the safe side?

Answers:

Those directions are only for people who's cycle is PERFECT, and no one's is. If it says ASAP, just wait a week for it to kick in. No biggie. You don't have to wait a whole month unless the pack specifies.

It is never effective immediately. You need it to build up in your system before it will work. I, personally, would wait a month. I have actually had many friends who got pregnant on their first month of birth control because they didn't wait. If you want to be protected, use condoms the first month.

How to Take Them. There are different options for starting the combination pill. You can start taking the pill on the first day of your period. Another option is to start taking the pill on the Sunday after your period starts. With this method, you need to use a backup birth control method for the next 7 days of the first cycle.

No matter which day you choose to start taking the pill, you will start each new pack of pills on the same day of the week as you started the first pack. It is a good idea to have an extra pack of pills and a backup method on hand, such as condoms, in case you miss some pills or lose your pack.
