This is usually referred to as the Rhythm Method or Natural Family Planning. The idea is that around the time of ovulation, there will be no sex.
Ovulation occurrs roughly half-way through the cycle, and a woman is considered fertile around that time, usually for about the week of ovulation.
You can purchase kits that tell you exactly when you're ovulating. You can also check for basal body temperature, cervix height, and cervical mucus. Your body temperature is higher during ovulation, the cervix is high (when you stick a finger in there and can't feel the cervix, you're possibly ovulating), and cervical mucus becomes thick, stretchy, and rather egg white-like.
About a week to two weeks after the your period ends is when ovulation tends to start.
Interesting question, by the way.
