Question: What are mattress toppers for?
Are they to add comfort to your mattress? I bought a bad mattress a few months ago and it's giving me back problems and aches (can't return it)
Would a mattress topper work for me? Which one is good for aches?

Answers:
Get a egg crate type foam mattress pad. Be prepared to spend $100.00. You can get them cheaper but you get what you pay for.
Mattress pads are actually used to protect the mattress against spills and stains. I don't think it'll give you that much extra comfort.
You probably need to buy a new mattress or foam for the top of it.
