If you're on your period you can't swim with a pad, and it wouldn't be a good idea to swim without one unless you use tampons.

Despite the myth, your period DOES NOT stop once you're submerged in water. That's a lie. And why risk it anyways? You really want to be swimming with a trail of blood behind you?

You won't get TSS unless you don't change your tampon after 6-8 hours. And if your mom's friend died because of tampons, its probably because back then there was a brand of tampons that was directly linked to TSS that is now banned because of a chemical used in those tampons. Tampons are made differently now and as long as you change your tampon every 4 hours or less, you won't get TSS.

If you can't wear tampons, then what you need to do is just not go swimming for that week that you have your period. Sorry, but that's what you gotta do.

You cannot swim with a pad, and if you swim with out one, u risk bleeding through your bathing suit. It's unfortunate what happened with your mom and her friend but tss is rare. And if you use a tampon properly there is no reason why you'd get tss.
You should ask your friends to get some tampons from their moms for you so you can try them out. It takes awhile to get use to them, but its definitely worth it. and makes your period wayy easier to handle especially in the summer

Wear a tampon when swimming.... And for your friend she probably died from toxic shock syndrome and you can only really get it from leaving it in too long like days so take it out and replace it with a new one every 3 to 4 hours

You can't swim with a pad, it will get set, swell and get soggy. You need some kind of plug. If you only wear a tampon for a couple of hours there is no need to worry about TSS.

I would suggest you wait unless you don't mind having a period-blood trail behind you.

No, you need a tampon or else you risk it leaking into the water
