Urgent Nuvaring question!?!

Question: Urgent Nuvaring question!?
I started using Nuvaring on March 3, 2011 and that week I was supposed to get my period but since I was going to the beach for that whole week I decided to put in Nuvaring a few days before my period started so that I wouldn't have my period at the beach. I read on the Nuvaring website that you're not supposed to do this, you're supposed to put it in on a certain day once your period has already started. After you insert the Nuvaring, you leave it in for 3 weeks then you take it out, have your period for a week, then put a new Nuvaring in. I didn't do this, since I started using it incorrectly to begin with. MY question is...Should I go ahead and put a new Nuvaring in, or should I take my current one out and just wait for my period? Any nurses out there who know the answer to this, please help!

I am very close with my gyncololgist and we talk a lot. I've even worked in her green house. Anyway I just wanted to let you know my info comes from her.

They want you to put it in on that day so you are less likely to ovulate and you are protected against pregnancy right way.

"Most often, women start using the ring within the first five days after the start of their periods. That way, they are protected against pregnancy right away. That means that if your period starts on a Wednesday morning, you can insert the vaginal ring as late as the following Monday morning to be protected right away.

If you insert the vaginal ring later than five days after the start of your period, protection will begin after seven days. Use another method of birth control — like a condom or spermicide — if you have vaginal intercourse during the first week of ring use."

You are going to be fine. There is a new thing out there called continuous birth control. I did this for 4 years (so does my sister). I took an active birth control pill 365 days a year for 4 years. There is no medical need to have a period. You can do the same thing with the Nuva Ring. Since they have not FDA tested it they won't say you could/should do this.

You skipped one period. That is fine. Women do it all the time. Just keep going with your Nuva Ring and take it out when the 21 days are up.

You could have spotting or break through bleeding before then since you skipped a period. You might or might not get your period when you take out your Nuva Ring. That is fine. Your body will just need time to adjust. You will get your period back if you don't get it the next time you take out your vaginal ring.

You are fine. :-)

Edit: And since the first answerer said you could leave it in for 4 weeks and not have a period that could be so. But even if you were to leave it in for 3 weeks and then put a new one in right after you, always will have the risk of spotting or breakthrough bleeding. My sister who is still on continuous birth control never bleeds. But me on the other hand, I had to stop. I spotted every single day for 4 years. I want to keep trying, but my body wanted to bleed. I ruined so many pairs of underwear! It works for some women, and not for others.

I use the Nuvaring too, and my gyno told me that the ring has enough hormone in it that you can actually leave it in for 4 weeks and use it to completely skip your period! There is nothing at all wrong with putting in the ring whenever, just leave it in and take it out after 3 weeks. Or, leave it in for 4 weeks and enjoy your new period-free life!
