Is this ovulation bleeding?!

Question: Is this ovulation bleeding?
I have had a very irregular period since graduation (lots and lots of stress). My mother and grandmother also have a history of irregular periods...and my doctor told me I probably have PCOS, though I am not legitimately diagnosed with it and I am against taking bc pills and I am not sexually active anyway. Anyhow, over the past 2 months I have had a crazy pattern.

I skipped a period in January and in late February I was late on my period w/ spotting, so I induced it by drinking parsley tea and it came as a normal flow (Feb 28-March 05). I expected my next period to come late March, but surprisingly exactly 2 weeks later I got another period (March 19-25). Now it is April 06 and I am having a light pinkish spotting sometimes when I go to the bathroom.

Admittedly, I have a ridiculous sleeping schedule and have been exercising alot more lately. Could this just be due to stress and abnormal hormone levels? Ovulation spotting? I would like to know if anyone has experienced something crazy like this before. I highly doubt it's something like cancer but it's just unnerving and I hope I'm not about to have ANOTHER period so soon. Sigh.

Answers:

Both stress and and an abnormal sleeping schedule alone can cause irregular periods like what you are describing. When you combine being stressed with sleeping irregularly, it makes it more likely.

It is quite possible that there is absolutely nothing wrong with your body, and that you're just subjecting yourself to too much stress. But even if you do have PCOS, or maybe if you don't but you just have irregular hormone levels, getting regular sleep and lowering your stress level is probably the best thing you can do for your overall health.

You don't NEED to get stressed out, even if you have life circumstances that seem to be causing the stress. Sleep is very important. Often, the idea that you get more done by staying up is a fallacy. You lose sleep, and then you aren't 100% so you don't work or concentrate as well, you make mistakes, or you don't work as effectively. If your stress is caused by interpersonal situations, relationship, family, that can be tough, but there are always things you can do to cope.

I have a page that has some tips from my own personal experience about how to overcome stress and anxiety: http://cazort.net/topic/natural-remedies… - you might find some of them useful.

Most important thing? Stop worrying. If you worry, you just cause more stress. You're probably a lot healthier than you think you are. Irregular periods are very common among women who sleep irregularly and are subjected to a lot of stress. Deal with the stress and getting your circadian rhythms back into balance.

If you go a couple months with a low stress level and regular sleep and your period is still not getting back to normal, then you might want to consider talking to a doctor, or perhaps a professional herbalist. Parsley tea can definitely bring on menstruation, but there are other herbs that can influence hormone levels and help bring your hormones back into a natural balance. But you will probably find it a lot easier to work things out if you have an experienced professional to guide you in doing this.

Good luck!
