How do I know if I'm bleeding too much?!

Question: How do I know if I'm bleeding too much?
Ok, I gave birth almost 5 months ago and just started my first period since then two days ago. My question though is am I bleeding too much? I am bleeding all the way through a tampon, a pad, my underwear and my pants (including jeans) in the matter of 2-4 hours. And it's not just a spot of blood coming through, its a lot. How do I know if it's too much or if this is normal for my first period since giving birth? I didn't go through this with my two oldest children and I'm very scared.

Answers:

Normally, the guide is soaking through a heavy pad in an hour or less is too much blood loss vaginally. However, when I got my first period after the birth of my daughter, I had what I considered severe bleeding. Soaking through a heavy pad every half hour. I had my blood levels checked numerous times, convinced I was bleeding to death but it turns out that some women just have really, really heavy menstrual bleeding their first period or two after birth. If you`re worried, by all means see your doctor. Especially if you start to feel dizzy or nauseaus.
