How do I get rid off muscle spasms at night? I'm a healthy 27 year old girl!

Question: How do I get rid off muscle spasms at night? I'm a healthy 27 year old girl,I don't know where those come from?
I go to sleep around midnight, I wake up around 4 am spasming. It almost feels like I'm being electrecuted. It starts in my shoulders, goes down my arms to my fingertips. Same with my legs- it starts at my upper body and shoots down my legs to my toes. I can't say it really physically hurts but it's emotionally annoying and keeps me from sleeping. On some occassions, the spasms throw me around the bed, they can get intense.
It happens ONLY when I lay down or when it wakes me up in the middle of the night, never while walking around or sitting. I'm a healthy 27 year old, I don't see how this could be happening to me and how do I get rid off it. If I had to go to a doctor, what kind of doctor takes care of such a thing?

Answers:

It's potassium. Eat bananas. Go to adoctor, maybe an orthopedist. It coulb be something wrong with your vertebrae...
maybe, you drink a lot of coffee? do you exercise? Anyway, go to a doctor.

You don't need a specific doctor yet - go to your normal GP and let them investigate, if there is something serious going on then they will refer you from there.

My thoughts are that it could be a form of Wittmaack–Ekbom syndrome, it normally has other symptoms but many people are unable to verbalise the other symptoms or fail to realise that they're related - although Wittmaack–Ekbom syndrome is unlikely with these symptoms you may be looking at some other neurological condition which would benefit from some of the same home treatment options.

Increase your intake or potassium, calcium and iron. Avoid alcohol, caffeine (including hidden sources like soda and chocolate) and smoking (if you smoke use Easyway). But certainly a doctor is your number one priority for something like this.
