Has any women used birth control after having a stroke??!

Question:

Has any women used birth control after having a stroke??

I'm 17 .. i had a stroke while i was 14... and most people say that most forms of birth control i can't take because of the heart and stroke risks. Has anyone went ahead and took the pills after a stroke.. or maybe knows of something i can use besides condoms. it would be a big help..thanks

Answers:

There are some other birth control options for you, but you need to discuss the issue with a qualified OB-Gyn. A lot will depend on what caused your stroke, as well as your family history. There are progesterone only contraceptives-- including both pills and an injectable (Depo-Provera) that might be appropriate, since estrogen is often the main concern.

Another option is an IUD, which is inserted into the uterus. There are some that contain hormones, but others that don't.

Since you've got a long reproductive life ahead of you, it's a great time to start talking to your doctor about your plans for preventing a pregnancy and planning your family. If you don't have a doctor, planned parenthood can help you as well, and it's entirely confidential.

Whatever you do--- don't fail to tell your doctor about your medical history. The risks can be significant for people who take the pill with pre-existing health conditions, and it's not something to take lightly.

Hope this helps and best of luck to you!
