Missed periods?!

Question:

Missed periods?

Im in my early 20s and have been regular until Aug of last year. I havent really had a period since then. Ive had a pap, ultrasound and blood work done and everything came out fine. I am tired of going to the doctor and I dont want to take birth control. Should I be worried or just wait it out? BTW I was told that my grandmother once went an entire year without a period.

Answers:

That's a pretty long time without a period. I have gone up to 6months without one during times of intense/chronic stress, i.e. graduate school. I'm also overweight so I think that also has a lot to do with the dry spells. I imagine someone underweight could have the same issues. I have noticed that when my stress levels are lower and I eat well (balanced meals, lots and lots of veggies and tons and tons of water) I have very regular periods.

I think the big concern is a loss of fertility. And in that case, I don't see how birth control pills would help since their job is to suppress ovulation and you're probably not ovulating anyways. Having a period while taking birth control is pretty unnecessary, except as an indicator that you're not pregnant.

These dry spells have hit me twice (I'm in my mid-20s) and I've just waited them out. I went to one doctor who was very concerned about the lack of a period. She sent me to have a transvaginal ultrasound (not fun!) done to rule out polycystic ovaries and they didn't find anything. I've had another doctor tell me that if it doesn't bother me and if I'm not currently trying to get pregnant that I shouldn't worry about it.

I think unless you're worried about your fertility and you want to get pregnant sometime soon, you've already done what you should to make sure you're alright.
