My Mirena came out!!! Now what?!

Question:

My Mirena came out!!! Now what?

Ive had the Mirena IUD for almost 4 months and have done exactly what the doctor told me. I check the strings like Im supposed to every month. I checked the strings last month and they felt a little longer than usual, but not enough to concern. After that, I felt a little uncomfortable during...things, and checked the string more frequently. They stayed that slightly extended length, but I became more and more uncomfortable. Last night, I checked again and the strings were double in length! The darn thing pulled right out. Nothing was broken off so Im not worried about that, but I am concerned about the risk of my becoming pregnant.
Since it was loose, is it possible that I could have become pregnant? Should I worry now, or is there enough in my system to protect me up until it came out?

We are going to stay away from hormones from now on. I was looking into getting the Mirena removed anyways. Any hormones in my system and I tend to turn into a moody mess.

Oh and no bleeding or cramping before or after having it out. In fact, I pretty much havent had a period.

Answers:

While the hormones PROBABLY protected you while the IUD was in place, if you had sex within the last 48 hours or so, I would probably be a little concerned if I were you. Contraception does NOT stay in your system....once the source is gone, so is the protection.

That being said, The chances of pregnancy are still pretty low, but this is one of the HUGE hazards of an IUD (they're NOT one-size-fits-all!). I would urge you to use back up contraception till you can get to the doctor, get checked and get on a different method of birth control. If this happened once, it is VERY likely to happen again, so I would not recommend having an IUD reinserted.
