Mom had a hysterectomy?!

Question:

Mom had a hysterectomy?

My mom had a hysterectomy, and I just wanted to know what were some things I'd need to help her with for the month or so that she's recovering? She'll have family members and friends aorund to help her with the housework (I can't do much bending and lifting myself as I'm very pregnant), but if you've had a hyseterectomy, what are some things you'd love someone to do for you? Like do her shopping, make her dinner, etc? Or just keep her company?

Answers:

OK. Having had one a couple years ago, here's what you need to know. First of all, it's very painful for several weeks, especially the first few. People shouldn't be "helping with the housework". They should be doing the housework for her for at least a month, preferably six weeks. This was major surgery. She should not be going up and downstairs for a week or two and then should start going only once a day slowly. Get her a bell, whistle, or intercom to summon help.
She should not do any shopping, making dinner, or whatever. She should be in bed with tv, remote, crosswords, books, or whatever makes her comfortable and the bathroom very close by.
Keep her company? By all means. Play a board game with her or cards or something if she likes those kinds of things. She will get really bored doing nothing, but if she overdoes too quickly she will end up in the hospital. Besides, she will be on pain killers and could end up falling or something. Someone should be there so she's not alone, especially the first week or two. Then she can be left alone but someone should be there for meals and stuff and there should be someone to call in case of emergencies. She will not be able to drive. Feel free to email me if you have other questions. Been there, done that.
BTW, the person who said their mom went to a concert the day she came home..... um..... if she really had a hysterectomy she would have been in a hospital that night. You can barely walk when you come home.
