Is it true that being "underweight" can make your periods stop?!

Question:

Is it true that being "underweight" can make your periods stop?

I was in the hospital yesterday and the doctor told me I needed to gain some weight. He said that my frame was never meant to be 120. I'm 5'5"! Isn't this the perfect weight for my height? He said I needed to gain at least 10 pounds. I had my period about a month ago and there is no sign of it coming yet. I had some cramping but that was it. My doctor said I am not pregnant, so that is ruled out. He said that because I'm underweight for my frame, I have stopped ovulating (????) I asked him how he knew this in just a month and he said that there are other things they look for as well. I eat well, too. I'm not one who eats like a bird. So how is this possible?

Answers:
