Skipped period or UTI?!

Question:

Skipped period or UTI?

I just skipped my last period on purpose. I'm on birth control so I didn't take the "period pills". I also found out today that I have a UTI. There was blood in my urine, so that's why i went in to the clinic. I keep having blood discharges and i don't know if it's because I skipped my period and its spotting or is it due to the UTI? Will it go away or should I see a doctor? Help please! I'm freaking out!!

Answers:

I have been on oral contraceptive for over 7 years. The first time you continue your active pills consecutively, skipping the week of inactive pills, you may experience some pain and spotting. However, a urinary tract infection can also cause pain and blood in the urine. If you only have blood when you urinate it is the UTI, if you have consistent spotting then skipping the period may be the reason. Skipping one period is not unhealthy and shouldn't detrimentally effect your body in a bad way. I have done it myself with doctor's permission so that it wouldn't ruin any special vacations. Some leaking or loss of bladder control may also occur from a UTI. However, continue to wear sanitary protection and drink cranberry juice to clean your urinary tract until you can get in to see your ob/gynecologist or usual internal medicine doctor. Go immediately if you are experiencing bad pain. When you make the appointment be sure to tell them you suspect that you have a UTI and have some questions about spotting while on birth control.
