Answers:

In inches, your fibroid measures 4.84'' by 3.54'', about the size of a large pear. This is considered quite large, but since fibroids are benign {non-cancerous; they are made of fibers of myometrial [uterine] muscle}, surgery isn't performed unless they cause discomfort or any other problems. The most common problem that usually arises from fibroids is heavy and/or prolonged vaginal bleeding. I've got three uterine fibroids: one the size of a large lemon, the other two the size of grapes. About two years ago I started bleeding heavily; I soaked a super-plus tampon AND an overnight pad every 30 minutes. After 3 days of such heavy bleeding I called my Gynecologist, who instructed me to go to the hospital ER immediately for him to evaluate me there. I had to put on adult diapers to make the 45-minute trip. My hemoglobin level was down to 7.4 {a normal count for a woman my age is 12 to 14}. Surgery was out of the question; I'm an Hepatitis C patient and my platelet count was 65,000 {a normal count is 150,000 to 400,000}. No responsible doctor will perform surgery on a patient with a platelet count of less than 120,000; the risks of bleeding uncontrolably during surgery are too great. A blood transfusion? My blood type is AB negative; chances of finding that type of blood is like looking for a needle in a haystack; less than 1% of the population has that type. So he started me on a high-dose BC pill {Ovral}, two pills every 4 hours. Twelve hours later the bleeding had diminished considerably, and he instructed me to keep taking one pill every 6 hours until the bleeding stopped, then one pill daily. I'm still on those pills; if I stop taking them, I'll bleed again. I know, because he tried to switch me to a lower-dose pill, and the bleeding started, so I had to go back to the first ones. Of course, my case is unusual; that bleeding is due on the most part from my liver condition, not the fibroids. I bleed like mad even from a little nick when I shave my legs.
I hope you don't have such a problem; if your doctor recommends surgery, get a second opinion. Over 60% of hysterectomies {removal of the uterus} done in the US are unnecessary, and your rights as a patient include getting a second, or even a third opinion before you give consent for elective surgery. Hundreds of patients die each year from complications due to surgeries that weren't necessary in the first place.
