Antibiotics and birthcontrol?!

Question:

Antibiotics and birthcontrol?

i know that taking antibiotics makes your birthcontrol less effective, but i was wondering if anyone knew exactly how much it effects it? is it barely effective or does it make it basically non-exsistant? i get UTIs a lot and have to take antibiotics for them everytime.
i'm on the ortho-evra patch and i always use a condom, but should i be worried if the condom were to break or something?

Answers:

It depends on which antibiotic you are using. Some antibiotics greatly alter the liver metabolism and would interfere with birth control. Other antibiotics really have no effect on birth control because they are not metabolized by the liver. You should ask the pharmacist about the particular antibiotic you are taking and whether or not it would interfere. It is not "all antibiotics" but rather only "certain antibiotics"
