Hair loss - 23yr old female?!
Question:
Hair loss - 23yr old female?
In the past 3 months I have noticed big clumps of loose hair from my head and I don;t know why? I am a vegetarian and thought it could be a lack of iron, but I've tried taking iron tablets and still no change. Any advice?
Answers:
It could be a variety of things. Do you have any other symptoms like dry skin, depression, intolerance to cold, or weight gain? I suffer from hypothyroidism, and one of the first things I noticed was I seemed to lose more hair than usual. When your thyroid is under active, your body seems to "slow down," resulting in weight gain, lack of retaining moisture (dry skin, hair falling out), and being more sensitive to temperature changes.
It could be stress. Have you been under more stress than usual? Have you been wearing your hair up more than usual? Have you ever asked your mom if she ever had problems with hair loss (perhaps it's genetics).
If it continues, I'd definitely see a doctor to have some blood work checked. Hypothyroidism is a completely livable disorder, but it requires daily medication. You may also want to have your vitamin and nutrient levels checked to see if they're all normal as well, as any sort of vitamin deficiency could be contributing to the problem as well.
