Answers:

The doctor will likely check you for physical conditions that may cause severe cramping, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome or endometriosis during your appointment. Birth control pills are not only for birth control. Since birth control regulates your hormones, which is what is essentially causing your problems, then you probably will be put on birth control. If you do have a condition causing your severe cramping, such as endometriosis, then taking birth control now may preserve your fertility and raise your chances of having a baby once you are married. Don't be embarassed to take birth control. You and your family know that it's for a medical condition and beyond that, your medical problems are nobody's business. As for a time to take birth control, I found it easiest to take it first thing in the morning.
I took birth control for several years before I got married to correct a medical condition and always thought of it more as hormonal control. It was only after I got married that it became birth control in my mind.
