NuvaRing compared to the pill?!

Question:

NuvaRing compared to the pill?

I'm on the pill (estrogen and progesterone) and it makes me sick to my stomach on certain days of the month, makes me retain water, and makes it impossible for me to lose weight (except during the week of sugar pills, then as soon as I take the active pills, I gain the weight again). I'm wondering if NuvaRing would be a better choice for me. It has a lower does of hormones, so does that mean it would make me less likely to retain water and gain weight? Anyone have experience with this or advice regarding these methods?

Answers:

Any hormonal changes can potentially make you gain weight b/c it messes with your appetite. I've been on the pill for a number of years and I've also used NuvaRing.

I prefer the pill, but I didn't have any problems with NuvaRing.

The key to not gaining weight when you change methods is to keep a food diary until your body has adjusted to the change. Keeping the diary will help you document the times of the month when your appetite starts to get out of control due to hormonal fluctuations. Knowing when your appetite will increase can help you eat in a more healthy way during those times and will help you maintain the weight you are interested in maintaining.

P.S. Water weight is a temporary thing. Continue to drink plenty of water during this time (or your body will retain even MORE water to compensate) and realize that it's just your body's way of preparing itself to protect you and a potential baby EVERY month.
