How come you get cramps when your on your period?

Scientific explanation please. Ive heard that it is muscles expanding to let the blood out.


Answers:

The uterine walls need to be shed because the egg has not implanted. Therefore, the uterus begins to contract in order to rid itself of the unused lining. The contractions are what are felt as cramps.
