Yep, you need to see a doctor. If you see a family practice doctor, he/she has had training in this area, so you wouldn't necessarily need to go to a gynecologist. If your family practice doctor cannot help you, ask him/her to recommend a gynecologist. Good chance that it's just a yeast infection, but the sooner you get it checked out, the better off you will be.

Going to the gynecologist can be scary at first. I know that I was worried and a bit embarrassed about it the first time, and really there's no need for it. All you have to do is call the doctor's office and tell them that you are a new patient and that you are experiencing vaginal discomfort and unusual discharge. Be sure to tell the receptionist how long you have had the problem so he/she knows that you need to get in ASAP. The receptionist may ask for more information or have you talk to a nurse. Be sure to answer their questions openly and honestly. There's nothing to be ashamed of!!

If the office has multiple doctors, he/she might ask if you prefer a male or female. If you do have a preference and you know that the office has male and female doctors, by all means make a request if the receptionist doesn't ask you. You have that right, and everyone has her own preference. I started out with women because I felt more comfortable talking to them. I had to see a different doctor once and there were no women available. I found that I actually preferred him. Sounds strange, but in my experience, the male doctors seem a little more gentle.

When you go to your exam, the more relaxed you are, the easier it will be. If you find you are a little nervous, write down your symptoms and questions that you have. It well help you remember everything, and it's kind of like a security blanket. A lot of people do this, so don't feel silly about bringing your list out. Spend some time talking to your doctor so you get a little more comfortable before your exam.

Don't be afraid to share your concerns and ask questions. You will be much more comfortable if you get your questions answered. Some doctors will tell you what they are doing while they are doing it while others will try to make small talk. If you have a preference, let your doctor know.

If you’re still nervous, have someone go with you. You can always ask that person to step outside while you change or during the physical exam. You don’t have to do this alone. Also, talking to other women may help to alleviate some of your fears.

I don't know anyone who enjoys going to the gynecologist, but it doesn't have to be scary. It's just one of those things in life that we have to do as women. It may feel a bit awkward, but in time that feeling subsides.

Good luck!
