What is battered wife syndrome?!

Question:

What is battered wife syndrome?

Answers:

Battered wife syndrome isn't really a good word for it. Instead, it should be called "husbands who beat their loving wives syndrome."

Basically, it is a condition in which the female partner of the relationship does not leave the relationship even though her partner is physically or emotionally harming her/putting her at risk.

It is common for many MANY people to blame the woman for the abuse. It is also common for people to give the woman major guilt trips for not leaving--as in, "Hello! He's leaving you with bruises on your face! Leave him!" That is a common reaction from people outside the cycle of abuse. There is a whole host of reasons why women don't leave, and each differs woman to woman. Sometimes it is difficult to leave because of financial reasons. Some women are financially dependent on their husband's income. Sometimes they stay for the children. Sometimes they are simply in love with their partner--after all, walking away from a romantic relationship is never easy.

So that is battered wife syndrome in a nutshell. Why do you ask? Are you experiencing abuse? Are you concerned for your well being and for your safety? If so, do you have a support system, family, or another place you can go?

Don't be afraid to reach out.

You have options.
