What are the pros and cons about getting an IUD?!

What are the pros and cons about getting an IUD?
I've heard that oftentimes the body rejects it, and while it's being rejected it tears the uterus. Is this true? I've also heard from relatives that had it that they can feel it "poke" them when they sit. What is believable?

Pro's : -
* An IUD works as soon as it is inserted
* It can stay in place for 3 - 10 years, depending on the type used
* Contraception does not have to be thought about
Con's : -
* Periods may be heavier and longer
* An IUD is not suitable for women who already have heavy periods
* It is not suitable for women at risk of getting a sexually transmitted disease.
