The only way that it would hurt would be if you didn't put it in properly-and even then, it would just feel a little uncomfortable-no real pain. If you buy a box of tampons, there is a little instruction manual in there (!!!) and it'll tell you exactly how to put one in and take one out properly. I think they also have an offer to send a free video if you're still uneasy about it, you might think about ordering that.
I was using tampons way before I had sex; you'll have no pain or discomfort when you follow the instructions, and pads are terrible because they feel like diapers after you've used a tampon. You'll be fine!
