What is actually happening when you menstruate?!

Question:

What is actually happening when you menstruate?

I should really know this by now, as i am almost 15 and have been a "woman" for almost a year, yet i don't. Like what exactly is happening inside you? And, what is happening when you skip a period? Will the next one be heavier? I've missed 5 months and was curious why and if my next period will be like a super period haha. Wow i feel stupid, but i really don't know much about my body.

Answers:

The way my mom explained it to me as a child--I know this sounds silly but it helped me understand it.
She made me think of a "nest" in my tummy. Once a month the nest would be cleaned out for a new one.

If you miss a period your next one may or may not be heavier--just depends. If you were to get pregnant, the baby would live off of what your period would have been until an embilical cord is grown after the first month of pregnancy--gross, but that's how a embryo "eats". I hope this helped a little.
