I gave my daughter away...?!

Question:

I gave my daughter away...?

I gave birth at 16 years old and gave my baby girl to a couple that I spent time with for adoption. I had no other options at the time, but now even though it has been a long time, I wake up with nightmares constantly always of her crying and not being able to comfort her. I have woken up with my arms actually sore, from wanting to hold her so badly. I have trouble sleeping, I cry at the sight of babies, and my maternal instincts are extremely strong even though I am a teenager... I don't want to see a shrink b/c I don't need antidepresants and there is not any special phsycological reason i feel this way other than I am a heartless pig for doing that. Are there any other birthmothers that feel the same way? or just anybody, what should I do? I can't ask for her back because she is old enough to know them for her parents now, and it would do more harm than good to get her back... I still can't support her anyways.... HELP...

Answers:

Al throughout life we face choices and like congress, its easy to second guess those choices after the fact. The fact you got pregnant is the issue working on you and that the product of that, a beautiful baby girl, haunts you. You need to go see a psychologist and yes, sometimes medication is needed.

You know you did what was right for the baby by giving her a chance at a decent life with loving parents. You realized that you could not, at the time, full fill those needs. Your not that " heartless pig" you talked about, but that is the way you see yourself and that is why you need some help.

Consider sharing with your friends the feelings you had and why you made those decisions with your life and that of your child. Maybe your wisdom will keep one other from making the mistake of getting pregnant early in life.

Don't loose sleep and get down, go get help. Your Love for your child was the guide that directed you to your actions. Its a tough decision, but it was best for the baby. Be strong and don't let doubt get you down.
