Is it okay to for the beginning of your period to be brown?

Yeah, it is very normal and it happens to me all the time. It just means that your period is very light and that the blood has become diluted with your vaginal moisture to look not so red. Sometimes mine is so light it stays brown, other times it gets brown just toward the end. As long as everything else in your health is fine you don't have to worry about it at all. Hope that helped.
